With
all other teams having two TEs, we knew this pick could wait for
a bit. But why Pettigrew with some vets still available?
He's a rookie - and rookie TEs (and receivers in general) don't
do well historically. He's got a rookie QB throwing him
the ball, even if he was the #1 pick in the draft. And he
plays for one of the worst
teams in NFL history. Hmm... come to think of it - why DID
we draft Pettigrew?!? Oh yeah, because we'd
rather take a
flyer on a highly touted TE like Pettigrew on a team that will
be forced to throw the ball a lot,
rather than settle for the 1-2 points a week we can expect on
average from guys like Desmond Clark,
Leonard Pope, or L.J. Smith. Linehan has worked wonders
with TEs before, so we'll happily take any possibility of an
upside with Pettigrew over being forced to hope that a 'veteran'
like Leonard Pope will somehow wash enough of the stink of
failure off himself to manage more than 23 catches a season.

Dolfi/Walls quickly
claimed both my PK targets. I was really looking forward to
having the Titan and/or Saint
as my PK. But since they are gone and fellow member Craig Davis
finally has his quota of Cowboys, I now
get to claim my token Cowboy for the roster. Folk is a very fine
kicker - no better or worst than most other professionals, but
he is a Cowboy.

If
you put together Tynes and John Carney's stats, you get 149
points, which would have led the league last year. The Giants
went back to Tynes by the end of last season and dumped Carney
so it's all systems go for Tynes. I know kickers rarely repeat
atop the league, but that is a couple of big seasons in a row
for the Giants kickers. Their offense will continue getting
plenty of looks, and Tynes can handle the Meadowlands' weather.

Back
to back Buffalo picks for Kellogg. Lindell had a down year
in 2008, but he still managed 124 points.
The addition of Owens to the offense should give him even more
chances in 2009 and since picking kickers
is like throwing darts in the dark, I opt for kickers on teams
that I expect to move the ball. Buffalo should do
that in 2009.

I already have two viable fantasy QBs, but in a draft this deep
it never hurts to have three starters. Culpepper
is slated to be the starter for now and that's good enough for
me. Likely won't see my starting lineup with the exception of
maybe one week.

Just a shot-in-the-dark pick here.
The Cardinals defense spends an awful lot of time on the
field. They give
up a lot of points, but should have extended opportunities for
sacks and interceptions.

Because
of the size of these FAD rosters, teams have a couple of chances
to have 'bonus' picks; ones that
are committed to a less likely contributors. (See recent
Culpepper, Choice, Galloway, Sanchez picks) and a few rookie
runners were disregarded and it came down to two younger receivers,
both with unsuccessful histories - Sweed PIT or Jones GB.
No one is suggesting that either be drafted for smaller rosters.
That said, based on the personality of the Packer's offense,
Jones is the wild WR7 pick.
In truth, I really do not understand Jones' lack of past
success. He seems as talented as many NFL starters,
but can not seem to get to that 500-4 production level. Maybe..
Just maybe... this will be his year.

As the draft dwindles down
to the longshots, deep sleepers, and backup players at
the minor positions, I just have one question for the
guys and gals reading this...what are you thinking?
Do you really need my analysis
of a 19th-round backup kicker?
Just in case the answer is "Yes, Brian! We
are dying for your salient thoughts on this most
urgent matter!" I'll remind you that Neil Rackers
was the top PK a few years back (2005) and, while it's
true that he has steadily slid to #19 last year in
FanEx scoring at his position, he apparently has a
stranglehold on his job, plays for a high-scoring
offense with a decent defense, and even as the #19
kicker last year burst out with NINE weeks with
10-plus points per week.
You're welcome.
Throw money.

It is hard to get excited over the
drafting of a backup kicker...but when the man in question is
one of the best
of all time and playing mostly indoors on a potent offense, I
get a little glimmer of a smile. Coming off the worst fantasy
season of his career, it seems reasonable that he will rebound
some and approach his career
average stats...which are pretty darn good. Normally we would
wait until round 20 for our second kicker in this format, but
it seemed likely that at least 2 and possibly 3 kickers
would go in the intervening picks and only
one position player, so we took the kicker now.

will be 40 in October, but the accuracy is still there.
He’s hit 88 percent of his field goals over the last
three years, 3rd-best in the league. He still has enough
pop to sneak in a 50-53 yarder, if necessary, and he
seems to be the most professional and precise kicker
in the league on shorter kicks. He’s an NFL-best 61
of
62 inside 40 yards over the last four years. Carolina
appears to be one of the league’s better teams, so
I think he’s got a decent chance to be a top-5 kicker
again this year.

Prater excelled
as a rookie, racking up 26 field goals and 39 PATs. He was
frequently used as a long-
distance option, as 20 of his 38 attempts came from distances of
at least 40 yards. Prater converted 5-of-6
of his attempts from distances of 50+. He missed six of his 11
attempts from 40-49 yards, so I am moderately concerned.
With that said,
I do expect to see Prater used frequently with Kyle Orton under
center. He’ll work the field efficiently and limit turnovers,
and it’ll be interesting to see whether Josh McDaniels works
Prater as a “Super Jock” option like Mike Shanahan did last
year. There’s definitely bonus potential here.
