We
always like getting a very good defense in this draft. Given the
rules of the league, we usually go with only one defense, and
are willing to take a zero in the bye week, to perhaps take
another late round flyer, or grab a 3rd QB or TE. For us it came
down to the Eagles and Giants. We feel they will do very well
this year despite
the big changes in the Def. Coordinators. Jim Johnson is
battling a life threatening illness (good luck, Jim!), and his
stand in is Sean McDermott, a very young defensive mind; we
believe that McDermott will be fine, and has been learning under
Johnson for years.
The loss of Brian Dawkins hurt Eagles fans more than it may hurt
the team. Dawkins is a ferocious hitter and
a ball hawk, but hurt the Birds in coverage. We expect the
Eagles to be a top 5 scoring defense again (they
were #1 in this format last year); and should take advantage of
the leads the offense will build for them...
Plus we are both Eagles season ticket holders...So what the
hell, right?

I'm happy to grab Davis as my
backup tight end. I have a feeling he might wind up as the
49ers' best receiver while they break in rookie WR Michael
Crabtree. Davis and coach Mike Singletary appear over their
issues from last year, and that might be enough for Davis to
finally harness some of his talent.

I
actually had wanted to get the Taylor/Maroney set but one of
them went too early for me so I opted for both
Darren McFadden's teammates instead. Fargas started most
of last year and Bush showed in week 17 that
if he is given the rock he has some pretty special skills.
Who knows, one of them might even be traded - but even if they
stick with Oakland all year, they should give me a couple starts
between the two of them.

It
is very common for me to draft an expensive kicker *before* the
current slot. Vinatieri, Vanderjagt, Lohmiller, Elam and
others were past high quality targets. The result of
these selections were similar. I got the pre-
season ego
boost of selecting a popular kicker -and- I did not win the FAD
contest. Last year, I even drafted three kickers. Hmmmm.. now
WWID? (What
would Ian do?) Gostkowski get
gone! My 2009 kicker picks can wait a bit.
RB Brandon Jackson was at one time expected to be a quick cure
for the Packers' running woes, after
Ahman Green jumped to the Texans. However, Ryan Grant earned the
starter job and Jackson has remained
a forgotten backup in Packerland. He has scored once per season
- All 4th quarter game-winners. When needed, the rested
and ready Jackson will be productive ... and sitting on this
bench as my final RB.

The rest of my draft calls for
picking up a couple of kickers, a couple of defenses and a
couple of guys who
I'm certain will be around a few rounds from now. While
kickers and defenses are both often referred to as crapshoots,
I like to take my kickers before the defenses because defenses
never get injured or cut. Pick a couple of
middle-of-the-pack Ds and you may strike gold like I did last
year with the Jets and Titans.
With Tom Brady returning,
expectations are that the Patriots will be one of the
highest-powered offenses in the NFL once again, so it makes
sense that I would want Gostkowski on my roster.

Someone has to catch the ball for
the Giants. Boss was a playoff monster and one of Eli
Manning's favorite targets in the end zone. Drafting
Jason Witten, the #1 TE on my list I just wanted to make sure
I had a serviceable backup that is involved in the offense and
Kevin Boss is exactly that. He's likely a 3 or 4
reception a game TE with the occasional big day so that suits
me just fine.

You know the old cliché.
"How the mighty have fallen." It was just two
or three years ago that Todd "Jalopy" Heap was
third-round material in TE-required leagues. Now I'm
able to nab him as a backup in the 15th round! What
gives?
Last year Mr. Heap was a major
disappointment to anyone who had pinned their hopes on him,
but thanks to
a couple of good outings in the second half of the season he
was #23 in FanEx scoring at his position,
making him an iffy backup. He's battled some nagging
injuries too, which is a big part of the problem; he missed
most of '07, but in points-per-week he was the #14 TE even
then. This pick is therefore a cheap gamble that the old
guy has one decent season left in him, but even if not, he'll
likely help my team a couple
of times this year, and I can't ask for much more from a
backup at this point in the draft.

Ordinarily, you wouldn't see me drafting a kicker before the
20th round, but this draft is all topsy-turvy. Wanted Gostkowski
in this slot, but somebody woke up Cahill after clock expired --
he sneezed loudly, which TC interpreted as "Gostkowski".
Ah, such is fate... Looking to just add point producers of any
type, thus the
veteran Akers. He shakes out as our #2-rated kicker in this
system, so I’ll break some more rules to select
him here.

This is a pure CYA selection. In the FAD, where you can not make
roster changes, we have always found it absolutely critical to
get 3 NFL starting QBs. There may be some young stud yet
undrafted that might put up decent numbers for half a season, or
some guy that will be better per start but that has a tenuous
hold on his starting job. But the reality is that there are only
about 24 guys that are guaranteed to start for 16 games
unless injured - and with byes and injuries, you absolutely
have to ensure that you get some kind of points at QB. For this
reason, handcuffing a stud like Warner is really not helpful,
since you are guaranteed to have a zero with one of your
precious roster spots in a best ball format. Collins will mostly
put up pedestrian numbers in this run-oriented offense, but he
will put up numbers...something that all the other remaining QBs
cannot
say at this point in the season. Besides, its kind of amusing to
be the only fantasy owners anywhere in the
world that can draft 3 QBs this year and honestly say that Matt
Hasselbeck is the YOUNGEST of the three!

I’ve
got five spots left, and I’ll almost certainly use four of
them on defenses and kickers. In this format, you
must use two spots on defenses, I think, and it’s risky going
with just one kicker. It definitely costs you a zero one week,
and there’s always an outside chance the guy will get hurt or
totally suck. I might have tried it with Gostkowski, but he’s
gone. So with my last remaining “wild card” spot, I’m
targeting the weakest area of my team. I was the last one to
select a quarterback, and I’ve got just the two serviceable
guys there — Roethlisberger and Garrard. One option I
considered was waiting until my last pick and selecting
Cleo
Lemon — ensuring I’d always at least have Jacksonville’s
quarterback. But I will instead go for a little more upside with
Byron Leftwich. I actually think he might be surprisingly good
for the Bucs. Maybe a top-15 quarterback if everything falls
into place. He might be my highest-producing quarterback some
weeks this season.

Mike Singletary wants to establish a run-first offense, and that
means a heavy workload for Frank Gore and a timeshare for
Coffee. Coffee has tremendous power (5.9 yards per NCAA carry in
2008) and could find
himself working into short-yardage situations.
