Final Analysis

 10.01
Mike Harmon
QB Trent Edwards
QB: Romo Edwards  RB: Slaton Ward TJones Greene  WR: Moss Housh Driver Holt TE: PK: DT:

As I surveyed the remaining quarterbacks in this slot, it was truly difficult to create separation between them. Ultimately, I opted for upside and snagged Edwards. Am I rolling the proverbial dice on good behavior from
TO, who has already received the key to the city? Yes. Yes, I am. With a one-year deal, I’m expecting strong weekly production from Owens and another double-digit touchdown season. Lee Evans is on the other side, finally working alongside a top-tier option. Add Shawn Nelson (sleeper TE) to the mix and Edwards could surprise.

10.02
TC Cannon  (via Allan trade)
TE Kellen Winslow
QB: Brees  RB: Turner Moreno  WR: Fitzgerald SMoss Cotchery Moore TE: Winslow  PK: DT:

'Zoom-Zoom' Winslow gets a fresh start was a Buccaneer and is selected over Cooley as this team's lead TE.  If you can overlook his often juvenile personality, you can see his very positive potential. He will be an important part of the Buc's offense that will feature plenty of Kellen Winslow -- simply because there are not  a lot of other options.

Also, speaking blunt, it has been a long time since any Buc has been on my FF roster. It will be something new for me to look forward to this season. We will know by late September if this was a wise choice or simply wishful thinking.

10.03

Chris Rito | Mike Nazarek
RB
Chester Taylor
QB: Warner Hasselbeck  RB: Westbrook Addai Parker Taylor  WR: AJohnson Colston Boldin TE: Daniels  PK: DT:
A calculated risk pays off as Taylor makes it through the turn. He was a top 30 RB in this scoring system (45 catches are a nice bonus) last year even with "All Day" playing all year. And imagine what  Taylor  will do if Peterson gets hurt! He is a bonafide fantasy RB#1 (at worst a #2) in that situation. But besides his steady contribution, he also has numerous big games each season (even while playing part time), so he might break into the starting lineup on more than a few occasions for the Mastermind squad. Realistically, he could be our second-best RB over the course of the season -- if the predictions of part time duty for Addai and Parker by some are correct, and Taylor merely repeats his recent performances.

10.04

Shannon O'Leary | John Georgopoulos
QB Eli Manning
QB: Cutler EManning RB: Williams Portis Lynch  WR: DJackson Breaston Walter Hester TE: Gates PK: DT

Several semi-positive passer options remain undrafted. Medium depth QBs on playoff quality teams were my target. Flacco and Manning seem the top options, and we prefer the Giant because we feel they will outscore the Ravens by a few passing TDs each month. While it is expected that RB Jacobs will be the endzone guy in Giantsville, let's not forget Manning's ego must also be gratified. Even with no name receivers, Manning will provide enough passing scores to justify his roster spot.

10.05
Brian Hulett
TE Chris Cooley
QB: Ryan  RB: Gore McFadden Stewart McClain  WR: Jennings Marshall Henderson Coles TE: Cooley PK: DT:
There simply is no good reason to draft a TE earlier than this.  In past seasons we've seen stud receivers at the position command a higher price, but not now.  The top guys have been too disappointing too often.

As for Cooley, he's steady as a rock.  Last year, although only scoring once (ugh), he set new career highs for receptions (83) and yardage (849).  He previously had scored at least six times each season, so '08 had to be just a bizarre aberration.  (Here's hoping.)  Even with only one score, he was the #5 FanEx TE last year, so he feels like a real steal as the 113th player selected.

10.06

Tony Holm
QB Kyle Orton
QB: McNabb Orton  RB: CJohnson KSmith Thomas McGahee Sproles WR: CJohnson Bryant Berrian TE: Witten  PK: DT:
This was a tough selection for me.  All the selections I was steering to all ended up being "strategy" picks and not necessarily good ADP or value picks.  I'm probably done picking RBs, one more at most, I need WRs
but the next 20 or 30 all look about the same to me so after some deliberation I selected QB Kyle Orton, DEN.  This one may back fire but you need producing QBs in the FAD as it's the highest scoring position.

Kyle Orton hasn't even been named the starter in Denver but putting together all the facts, it sure seems like he will be and given that he has a nice upgrade at the WR position, has the chance to do well.  I don't like QBs in new systems but looking at what's left I wanted a higher risk, higher reward QB and Kyle Orton is it.  Orton did quite well in Chicago last year with little to no help catching the ball, he's under the tutelage of new head coach Josh McDaniels, New England's offensive coordinator who worked with Tom Brady and Matt Cassel and I suspect the Broncos will want to leverage their strength in the passing game a little more than usual this year and that will require an accurate QB.  The winds of change are in Denver.

10.07

Duane Cahill
WR Plaxico Burress
QB: Manning RB: SJackson Jacobs LJohnson Mendenhall WR: Royal Ward Crabtree Burress TE: Gonzalez  PK: DT::
I've been eyeballing Plaxico Burress for the last couple of rounds, and just waiting until I thought the time was right to grab him.  Frankly, the "right" time is probably a round or two from now, but when I looked at the available backups at QB, RB and WR, I didn't really see anyone that was a must-have for my squad.

Burress sits there with the Sword of Damacles hanging over his head in the form of a potential 3-1/2 year
prison sentence for unlicensed possession of a handgun in New York State.  That said, I would expect the probability of a lengthy appeals process (now including a possible argument that New York's laws are unconstitutional) is fairly high and that Burress (like most athletes, it seems) will get off with a significantly lighter penalty involving probation and community service.

If I'm right, and Burress winds up in Tampa or with the other New York team, here's a 10th round steal - potentially enough to help me knock Ian Allen off the FAD throne.  If I'm wrong, then Burress joins busts like Brandon Jackson, Matt Leinart and Jon Kitna, all of whom were taken in the 10th round of last year's FanEx FAD.

10.08

Craig Davis
WR Miles Austin
QB: Schaub Cassel  RB: Forte Barber FJones WR: Bowe Edwards Holmes Austin TE: Carlson  PK: DT:
Austin is going to get the first crack at being the WR2 behind Roy Williams, and with his speed and ability to
run correct routes, he could be a major surprise in the fantasy world. Austin possesses the ability to get behind defenders but is also not afraid to go over the middle to make a tough third-down catch in traffic. With Owens now in Buffalo, Dallas has been looking to find that perfect complementary receiver to Williams. I believe Austin can be that guy.

10.09

Greg Kellogg
WR Mark Clayton
QB: Brady RB: Tomlinson Wells DBrown  WR: Owens VJackson Mason SSmith TE: Clark  PK: DT:
There are two trains of thought for leagues like this when you get to this point in a draft.  One says swing for the fences and go after boom or bust players.  The other says play it safe and get someone you know will score even if you don't expect a lot from him.  My thought is to combine the two philosophies.  First, get that player that has been steady but has some upside.  Then go after the long shots.  This is my "safe" pick.  Clayton
should get me 50-60 receptions, 600-750 yards and 4-6 TDs.  The upside - if Derrick Mason falls apart, Clayton becomes Joe Flacco's go-to guy.

10.10

Matt Pitzer
TE Greg Olsen
QB: Rivers Palmer  RB: Jones-Drew Grant Lewis  WR: Wayne RWilliams SMoss Curtis TE: Olsen PK: DT:
I'm happy with my front-line players at the other positions so I could go searching for a bargain at tight end. I was happy to find one in Olsen, my sixth-ranked tight end. Olsen had a solid rookie season, showing flashes of brilliance at times. Now, with QB Jay Cutler coming over, the Bears will be ready to throw quite a bit more. They don't have any reliable wide receivers so it will be a lot of Olsen all over the field.

10.11

TC Cannon
RB Fred Taylor
QB: Brees  RB: Turner Moreno Taylor WR: Fitzgerald SMoss Cotchery Moore TE: Winslow  PK: DT:
The Patriots are a fine team that scores often. Having their most productive rusher would benefit any FF bench as part-time starter. The primary problem with investing a selection on the Patriots' main man is that no one knows who that lead man will be. RB Maroney *was* the guy, until he was damaged in September. Now, the elder Taylor joins the team, and he is my projection to be their primary rusher. Sure Faulk will also get a lot of 3rd down action. So it could be the league's true Rusher-By-Committee story with a three-way split being common in Boston. Even so, 600 rush yards and six scores seems a reasonable outlook for Taylor. Hmmm.. maybe I will do a Taylor/Maroney handcuff with the next pick. Let me sleep on it.

10.12

Chris Dolfi | Tom Walls
QB Shaun Hill
QB: Rodgers Hill RB: Peterson RBrown JJones Hightower WR: White Evans Avery Ginn TE: PK: DT:
We wanted to get a competent backup QB at this point, but we actually think we made one of our best picks of the draft with Shaun Hill at 10.12.  Hill didn't start for the 49er's until game eight, but when he did he put up great stats.  He was 12th in the NFL in QB rating (87.5) and still topped 2,000 yards in the nine contests he started.  But what really impressed us was his scoring in this format - he averaged 18.867ppg, and if we use that average to figure out what he might have gotten for a whole season, we come up with 301+ points for the season, which would have ranked him 12th in QB fantasy scoring!  He threw at least 1 TD in every game that he started, save one. Toss in the fact that San Fran grabbed a real receiving threat in Michael Crabtree, and we are VERY excited about the upside on Shaun Hill this season.
