We
needed another WR to bolster or receiving corps, and Ginn topped
our list of the remaining WR talent for several reasons.
He's a #1 WR, he's in his 3rd year (which is when conventional
wisdom says WRs really 'break out'), and he is in a stable
situation - same coach, same QB. Toss in the fact that
Miami improved its offense greatly last year, and seems poised
to continue in that direction, and Ginn could easily start for
us on
a near-weekly basis. He needs to improve on his 2 TDs per
season, but his 14.1 ypc average has us thinking this guy could
easily crack the top 25 WRs in 2009.

I was the last to
select a quarterback, so I want to add a second competent player
at that position — somebody I can pair with Ben Roethlisberger
for a one-two punch. I was looking at Eli Manning and
David Garrard. Initially, I thought I’d go with Manning,
figuring he’d be a safer bet to play 16 games. As the pick got
closer, though, I changed my mind. Garrard will run for about
300 yards and 2-3 TDs, while Manning won’t run at all. And
Manning actually doesn’t pass nearly as often or effectively
as you might think. He’s usually around 205-210 passing yards
per game, and he’s never thrown more than 24 TDs in a season.
Garrard had a terrible year last year but was still way better
than Manning. Now Garrard is in much better shape and has a
better offensive line. Plus I have a soft spot for him. He
helped me win both of the FanEx competitions last year —
the
FAD and the 24-team head-to-head deal.

I admit, I'm a
sucker for Curtis. I see a guy who had a phenomenal 2007 season
but was sidetracked last
year. The Eagles have added new parts the past two years in
DeSean Jackson and Jeremy Maclin, but I think Curtis stands as
good of a chance as any of the three to be the No. 1 receiver.
We know the Eagles will throw
a ton so as a fourth receiver, Curtis is an OK gamble. If he
stays healthy, he might be back near 1,000 yards
as he was two years ago.

QB: Brady RB:
Tomlinson Wells DBrown WR:
Owens VJackson Mason SSmith TE:

This
is one of those make or break type picks. Brown was
considered by some to be the top back in this year's draft
class. He clearly has talent as indicated by his senior
season at Connecticut where he led the nation in rushing with
2,083 yards on 367 carries (160.23 ypg). He also scored 18
TDs. If he takes the job away from Joseph Addai, this is
the SotD for 2009.

The
selection of Felix only makes sense here because it fills two
roles. First, it’s a great handcuff in case Barber
were to miss an extended period of time. Second, if for some
reason Barber were to lose his job, Jones is next in
line, and behind that massive unit Dallas has, the sky could be
the limit for Mr. Jones. When he was healthy, Jones was a great
change of pace back for the Cowboys. This year, I believe
he’ll serve a bigger role.

Last year, Mendenhall was poised
to make a run for a good share of the Steelers carries.
That, before
getting knocked out by Ray Lewis (just another
reason to hate the guy) in the first game of the season.
But while Willie Parker will still get the majority of the carries in
Pittsburgh, Mendenhall will eat into his total. I
expect
Parker to reprise his 2008 total of about 200
carries again this season, after toting the rock over 300
times each in 2006 and 2007.
If Parker remains healthy,
Mendenhall will get carries befitting his draft position.
If not, Mendenhall steps in as a starter. And while it's
certainly too early to make any firm predictions on his
health, Parker didn't do any
running in the off-season. Sure, he worked out with both
weights and cardio, but it struck me a little odd that a guy
whose calling card is his speed did no speed work in the
off-season - especially with a potential
all-around back (and
not to mention first round pick) like Mendenhall breathing
down his neck for playing time. Stay tuned.

I had this pick narrowed down to
either Felix Jones or Darren Sproles with an eye toward
Rashard
Mendenhall. Given that Jones and Mendenhall went before
me, that made my choice easy.
Sproles was the Chargers tagged
franchise player and figures to play a decent sized role in
the Chargers running game. After going off at the end of
last year, he certainly has earned a shot. The knock on
Sproles
is that he's a lil' thing and that's true. In the best
ball FAD though I'll get all his explosions, and there will be
statistical explosions from Darren Sproles in 2009. I'm
just hoping there's a bunch of them!

Last year's Mr.
Out-of-Nowhere, LeRon McClain, may not improve on his
performance from last season. Second-year man
Ray Rice may indeed become the top back, or
disappointing veteran Willis McGahee may make a
comeback. Rookie Cedric Peerman might even prove
to be the steal of the '09 draft. But so what?
Many take it for granted
that McClain's being officially moved to FB means he
won't be as involved. If true,
the Ravens are idiots. He scored 11 times and
ran for over 900 yds as part of a three-headed
backfield, and was their most effective rusher.
As a bonus, he even had five games with multiple
receptions. I'm certainly willing to gamble a
9th-round pick on such a player playing a productive Bettis-like
role in a similar backfield situation for the season
to come, at the goalline and elsewhere.

The
investment in QB Cutler (over Warner, Ryan, Romo) to this roster

We
wanted to get out backup QB with one of our next two picks, and
we felt better about the remaining depth
at RB and WR so we took Hasselbeck here. This is an admitted
risk with his age and recent injury history, especially with an
even older Kurt Warner as our QB#1. With some of poor pass
defenses on the Seahawks' schedule this year, he should have a
chance to put up some occasional big games and get us some
points.
His receiving crew can only get better with numerous injured
wideouts returning to the lineup and the
maturation of top target TE John Carlson, plus the obvious
upgrade with the addition of T.J. Houshmandzadeh. Another
driving factor for this selection is the fact that the remaining
QBs on the board either have a tenuous hold on their starting
job or offer little upside (in some case both), and this
veteran's situation shows promise
for some improvement in 2009.

I’m adding a fifth running back into the mix. This gives me a
nice package of guys, I think, to handle the 17-week season.
I’ve got two durable guys with defined roles (Benson and
White). And I’ve got three smaller backs who should catch a
bunch of passes — Bush, Rice and now Washington. All three of
those smaller backs might catch 50-plus passes. Washington was
at 47 catches last year, and I think his role is going to
expand. The Jets really featured Thomas Jones last year, but
he’s 31 and upset with his contract. Washington has averaged
over 5 yards per carry two years in a row. Nice upside.

Greene showed great power and burst en route to a 13-game streak
of 100-yard efforts at Iowa. He also has
a nose for the end
zone, so I’m intrigued with him here. I have Thomas Jones
(sixth), who might force his way
out of NY before the summer ends. That would put Greene in at
least a split workload with Leon Washington, who went just
before this pick. At worst, I’ve got a key to the handcuffs in
what promises to be a running
offense.
