There's
one glaring good thing and one glaring bad thing about getting
Donnie Avery:
The good thing:
- He's the Rams #1 WR
The bad thing:
- He's the Rams #1 WR
We struggled with the choice between Avery and Donald Driver. We
think Driver would have been a safer, more steady pick. Avery is
more of a home run hitter and we think that with this format we
will be rewarded more for his hits than misses. The Rams stink,
we all know it; so they will be chucking the ball around a
bunch. We think Avery can approach 75 receptions with about
950-1050 yards. He'll get these yards in bunches, and most of
them will be in the second halves of games.
We also toyed with taking Donovan McNabb out of pure spite, but
cooler heads prevailed!

I'm
probably getting fairly predictable in my drafting of Donovan
McNabb but with the addition of rookie speedsters Jeremy Maclin
at WR and LeSean McCoy at RB to go along with the already
talented Brian Westbrook, the sky seems the limit for McNabb
this season. The Eagles boast arguably the best
offensive line in football with the additions of Jason Peters
from the Bills and Stacy Andrews from the Bengals which will
only help protect McNabb. McNabb played in all 16 games
last year and as long as that continues, expect another big year
from him as he may finally have an offense that will make
him look good.

I
would have loved to have grabbed Donovan McNabb as my No. 2
quarterback, but he went one slot ahead of me. No other
quarterbacks were all that interesting, so it was onto finding a
third running back. I don't love Lewis; I don't know anybody who
does. But I don't see anybody else pushing him for too many
carries and the Browns will try to develop a powerful,
consistent run game. So could he wind up with a decent year?
Sure, but I'm not pinning my season on it.

Yeah, he's old.
But last year he caught 80 passes for over 1,000 yards and
scored five times. With a rookie quarterback. People
have undervalued Derrick Mason his whole career but the truth is
he is top 25 in career receptions and all purpose yardage and if
he has a decent year (85-1,200 yards) he will bypass Jim Brown
and Tony Dorsett (among others) in yardage and Steve Largent and
Jimmy Smith in receptions. Not bad for a guy who was
drafted as a return guy.

Continuing to
try to piece together a semblance of a wide receiver corps, my
second wideout will be none other than Steelers favorite Hines
Ward. Not only because I need to make the requisite
homer pick, but I believe that Ward is not quite ready to
allow Santonio Holmes to surpass him in production just yet.
Sometimes our
recollection of events is somewhat clouded by more recent
memories, and such is the case with Ward vs. Holmes. We
all remember the spectacular Holmes catch that won Super Bowl
XLIII for the Steelers, and so we see him as the #1 receiver
on this team. Not so fast, grasshopper. Ward
finished the 2008 campaign with half again as many catches as
Holmes (82 to 55), 25% more yards (1047 to 821) and two more
TDs (7 to 5).
This is another
value pick for the Cahill squad as Holmes was selected two
rounds ago.

Even though I
needed WR I couldn't pass up Donovan McNabb earlier in the
round and I hoped that Bernard Berrian would last, I assumed
he would given his ADP and I'm satisfied grabbing him here.
There could be a QB carousel in Minnesota, or he could become
Brett Favre's favorite target, only time will tell.
Berrian had a gaudy 20.1 yards per catch as he was as
explosive as anyone in the league, a perfect FAD player.
He's an improving player on an improving offense who already
accomplished big things in 2008. I expect more than
1,000 yards as yards are not a problem for him, he had 964
yards on 48 receptions and 7 TDs in 2008. If he catches
75 balls then he could go to the front of the WR class with
his explosiveness and ability to score from anywhere on the
field with long yardage eating plays. On a run-first
offense I doubt it, but the opportunity is certainly there and
I like him as my #3 WR.

Amazing.
When you think you're a pretty good owner and in a pretty
tough league, one of the things that can confirm this belief
is the thing that just happened here: For this pick, I
had a wish list of three wideouts. They were, in order:
Hines Ward, Bernard Berrian, and Devery Henderson. Check
the two guys who went right before my slot.
While it's
somewhat disappointing to settle for the third guy on my list,
Henderson's upside is notable. I don't have to tell any
fantasy owner what Drew Brees did last year in New Orleans,
and Henderson is one of his top three targets. He's the
type of player who you WANT to start every week because you
know he'll tear off a few of those 100-yd, 2-TD outings now
and then. In this best-ball format we get credit for the
best possible starters each week, so I know he'll do me proud
a few times this year.

Many discount
"Fast Willie" due to durability concerns and the
possible rise of second-year pro Rashard Mendenhall in the Steel
City. But Parker has already proven he can carry the load as a
feature back, and has also proven to be a good short-yardage and
goal-line back despite his size. He also was still "the
man" in this run-first offense until getting hurt in week 3
last season, with then-rookie Mendenhall riding the pines. While
it is unlikely he will repeat his 2005-2007 numbers, it is very
reasonable for him to exceed 1000 total yards and at least a
half-dozen scores in 2009. In the best-ball scoring format, the
weeks in which he has one of his patented highlight reel dashes
will be very useful for us. Heck, even a 50-50 split in fantasy
points in the Steelers' backfield makes FWP a much better
fantasy value than other options available here in the late 7th
round.

I
originally thought I could wait until the ninth round to select
a quarterback, but they’ve been flying off the board – 12
have been selected so far. So I feel I need to address this
position now. If I were to wait until the time time around,
another 6-8 quarterbacks could be gone, leaving me really
picking through the scraps.

Driver earned his sixth 1,000-yard season in his past seven
campaigns. He’s averaged 83.6 receptions in
the past five years, and QB Aaron Rodgers should be even more
efficient in year two. Yes, the running game should be more
consistent, and the defense can’t get any worse (right?), but
Driver remains a reliable target.
